Lake Altus-Lugert - Quartz Mountain State Park
The park and lake offer a variety of recreational activities, and the rugged granite hills and fascinating geologic history promise a unique experience for the hiking enthusiast. Trout season is November 1 - March 15. Museum of the Western Prairies - Altus
The Museum of the Western Prairie houses two main galleries exploring the history of Southwest Oklahoma. Topics include fossils, Native Americans, the Great Western Cattle Trail, frontier life, agriculture, the and Altus Air Force Base. On the grounds you will find farm tools, an operating windmill, a half-dugout, and a carriage barn with various displays including a mail hack and blacksmith shop. Admission is free. Tom Steed Reservoir
The Reservoir lies on West Otter Creek, northeast of Altus. Agricultural crops and native short grass, with scattered growths of hardy mesquite trees provide a sharp contrast to the stark granite outcrops of the nearby Wichita Mountains. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is only a few miles to the east and is home to large herds of roaming buffalo, longhorn cattle, elk and smaller bands of other protected animals.
