The city of Atoka was named for Capt. Atoka, Choctaw leader and signer of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, 1830, providing Choctaw removal from Mississippi to Indian Territory. The city was founded in 1867 by Rev. J.S. Murrow, a Baptist Missionary. Best Western Atoka Oklahoma.

Boggy Depot State Park
This Park gets its name from Clear Boggy Creek, which flows, to the east. It was also used as a Confederate commissary depot during the Civil War. Located along the old Texas Road between Ft. Gibson and Ft. Washita, Boggy Depot was a well-established crossroads during the Civil War. The Park's features include a fishing lake, nature/walking trail, softball/baseball diamond, playground, picnic tables, group picnic shelters, campsites and comfort stations with showers. Confederate Memorial Museum & Cemetery
Located on the site of a Confederate outpost throughout the Civil War, the Museum features Civil War artifacts found in the area as well as Choctaw Indian and local artifacts. McGee Creek Reservoir
McGee Creek Reservoir is located about 15 miles southeast of Atoka in one of the State's most scenic areas. The land surrounding the lake is covered with dense forest and the area provides numerous recreation opportunities, including water skiing, boating and fishing in the lower reservoir area. The upper and forested areas provide scenic enjoyment. Bugaboo Canyon Natural Scenic Area, covering 8,900 acres, lies to the northeast, providing hunting, fishing and nature studies. McGee Creek State Park
McGee Creek State Park and Natural Scenic Recreation Area occupy the SW edge of the Ouachita Mountain Range in SE Oklahoma. The lake is well stocked with largemouth bass, all varieties of catfish, crappie, small mouth bass, and perch. The Natural Scenic Recreation Area offers hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails. The Natural Scenic Recreation Area is an 8,900 acre preserve, open all year and offers nature lovers over 35 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails.
