Fort Sill , located near Lawton, is the only remaining active Army installation on the South Plains that was built during the Indian Wars. Did you know that Geronimo is buried at Fort Sill? He arrived at Fort Sill in 1894 and was buried there in 1909 after dying from pneumonia. This southern Oklahoma base supports the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Marines.
The United States Army Field Artillery School, the 75th Fires Brigade and the United States Army Air Defense Artillery School are all located on base. The base is home to over 10,000 soldiers and their families and trains over 7,000 civilians each year through Basic Training. Many events, including fishing tournaments and ceremonies, are held on base and open to the public. Stay close to the action on base and enjoy comfortable accommodations, with Best Western hotels.
Quanah Parker Star House
The Quanah Parker Star House was the home of Comanche warrior and leader Quanah Parker and his family. The house was built in 1890 near Lawton in Southern Oklahoma. Parker was a respected leader in the Comanche Nation and statesman. The house has four large white stars on the roof. One theory is that the stars represented the night sky overhead.
Parker's daughter bought the house after Parker's death in 1911. The house was relocated to Eagle Park after it was almost destroyed by Fort Sill. Even though the house is not available for touring, the house hosts Comanche events and activities for the Parker family.
